Edinburgh Orthopaedics

The Edinburgh Royal Infirmary provides primary trauma care for the Edinburgh and Lothians population, performing over 6,000 operations and 30,000 outpatient consultations each year.  In addition, our Major Trauma Service provides complex trauma care for the South East of Scotland, covering a population of over 1.5 million.

We were one of the very first specialist trauma centres in the UK, and since the early 1980s our consultants have had trauma as the major focus of their clinical practice. Our team includes 12 consultant orthopaedic trauma surgeons and four consultant orthogeriatricians. It remains one of the busiest trauma centres in the country dealing with complex injuries for South East Scotland region and difficult elective reconstructive conditions.

A centre of clinical and research excellence, the Edinburgh Trauma Unit is widely regarded as a world leading institution in Orthopaedic trauma care. The annual trauma symposium attracts international speakers and delegates and is ran by the local faculty.
